I couldn’t resist basing my Blog title on the glorious novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, “Love in the Time of Cholera”.  Love (and marriage) are definitely not cancelled during Covid-19!

There has been lots written about what to do about postponing your wedding and about five person weddings, but I’ve come up with some positive reasons to get married during the global pandemic!

1. REGAIN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN WEDDING

You may have started wedding planning and quickly realised that absolutely everyone, from your next door neighbour to your receptionist at work, has advice to give; you must have a videographer, hens’/bucks’ party, wedding favours, specially crafted “Will you be my ring-bearer cards?” (plus gift, of course) and it goes on and on.  Getting married now means that you can avoid all the advice and do what you want for your five person wedding.  You may still get dressed up if you choose, have flowers or not, have a photographer/videographer (if you have both, they need to double as your two witnesses), write your own vows, have wedding rings etc.

2. MARRY LEGALLY NOW, PARTY LATER

Have the simplest “Legals Only” ceremony to be legally married now, then party in whatever way you choose when this crisis is over - big reception venue type celebration or a barbeque in your backyard with everything else except the legal parts of your ceremony.  Consider holding it on your first anniversary.

3. WEAR YOUR WEDDING DRESS TWICE

For both the Legals Only Ceremony now and your Commitment Ceremony further down the track.  This has to be a bonus!

4. SUPPORT WEDDING VENDORS NOW

We all know that many businesses are doing it tough right now with little (or zero) money coming in through the door.  Some may not even survive until Covid-19 is a distant memory.  Postponing your big wedding will mean you have time to save up for some things you had previously discounted, such as a videographer (see my Friends list on my website for awesome suggestions).  If you have a five person wedding now, have a videographer and photographer there to capture it (and be witnesses), give them some business, stop fights among which 2 family or friends you’ll bring along and then show the video and display your wedding album at your big party later.  It’s a win all round!

5. SAVE MONEY (OBVIOUSLY!)

In times of economic uncertainty, a big wedding may not seem as desirable anymore.  Save masses on a pared back ceremony (while still making it very much your own) and plan to use the money saved towards a deposit for a house, or a romantic overseas honeymoon next year when we can all travel again.

6. HAVE A GREAT STORY TO TELL

In years to come when your children and grandchildren ask, “What did you do during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020?”, you’ll have the best answer ever – “We got married!”

7. TIME TO USE A GREAT QUOTE IN YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY

And lastly, to get back to where I started, it would be the perfect time to use a quote from Gabriel Garcia Marquez in your ceremony:

“It was the time when they loved each other best, without hurry or excess, when both were most conscious of and grateful for their incredible victories over adversity”.
